Buyers Guide

With the list above I’ve made it easier for you to source some quality essential oils, but It’s important to know that not all essential oils are created equally. There are a few key points to take into consideration before jumping in and purchasing your essential oils.

Just a quick scan of a company’s “About us” page will probably do the trick. How long have they been in business for? Do they promote sustainable practices? I also like to look for a sourcing page to see what the oils I buy come from

Ok this is a must guys! The company should 100% third party test their oils and better yet display their GC/MS results on their website for all to see.

All essential oils should be stored in an amber glass bottle to protect the oil from oxidation caused by sun exposure. Make sure the seal has not been opened or tampered with, and finally check for an expiry date.

No, no I’m only joking, put Duo Lingo away. You do want to make sure the Latin names of the plant are on the bottle though as some plants have various types. For example Lavender has Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula latifolia so you want to make sure you’re getting the correct one!

It’s important to know that carrier oils are very different from essential oils. Some plants, like rose, are used to produce both essential oils and carrier oils. So remember, an essential oil is volatile, concentrated, watery and very fragrant, whereas a carrier oil will be thicker, safe for skin, with a mild smell.Toggle Content

This is in quotation marks for a reason! Unfortunately the essential oils industry is not regulated meaning anyone can write this on their labels. Be aware that just because a brand has this on their label, it does not mean they are of high quality.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

WHAT ESSENTIAL OILS WILL MAKE MY HOUSE SMELL GOOD?

Other than using the essential oils listed above Rose, geranium and orange are pleasing, uplifting essential oils. For an intimate atmosphere, use sandalwood, or patchouli. For unwinding choose geranium, sandalwood or ylang ylang.

How can I make my house smell nice all the time?

As well as using essential oils you can also make sure your home as an all year round lovely aroma by doing the following:

  • Simmering herbs and fruit on the stove
  • Add indoor plants throughout your home
  • Add essential oil infused dry balls throughout your house

Everyone knows that “nothing is more memorable than a smell.” When someone enters your sanctuary of a home they should be engulfed by the aromas that surround them. The entrance point to my home is where I close the door to the world of hustle and bustle and sink into the zen bubble I have created. It’s a transition from the public to the private, and using scent to define this shift can be extremely powerful.

I’m here to tell you about not only the best smelling essential oils for your home but also the benefits they may have!

Best smelling essential oils for your home
“The entrance point to my home is where I close the door to the world of hustle and bustle.”

Smells are a gateway to our memories and they heavily influence our emotions. Don’t just take my word for it, science says it as well! Have you ever had it when someone walked past you and their fragrance has reminded you of an old partner? or a relative? Maybe you’ve walked into a room and the scent brings back a childhood memory?

It has been proven that essential oils affect us, if you’re still a little confused don’t worry let me get a little bit more technical.. As we inhale the essential oil the scent molecules interact with the lining of our nose, and the particles travel into our brain’s olfactory bulb. These molecules are then processed into a readable scent, and brain cells convey the information about that aroma to your amygdala, this is the emotion hub. Then continuing to the hypothalamus, which is our learning and memory center. I hope I haven’t lost you after the scientific chat!

So, what I’m trying to get at is, choosing the best smelling essential oils for your home is actually pretty important! And that certain essential oils may work better in one space rather than another. Of course, we all want to be the best version of ourselves in an environment we spend most of our time in, so if we can enhance this in any way it would be silly not to.

It is important to first understand what your intention is for the space and how you want yourself or others to feel whilst being there, you can then source what essential oil is best.

It’s also common knowledge that we sadly live in a world of toxins. It’s easy to think that by adding nice smells to our homes, we are just freshening up the space. Well, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this isn’t the case. Plug-in air fresheners, room sprays, and candles could all be releasing horrible toxins into your nice clean air. It’s time to put down the Yankee candle and step away from the febreeze. Not to worry though! That’s where these magical little drops of oil come in.

I can’t believe I actually had a life of supermarket-bought candles and air fresheners once upon a time. It all ended when I dove headfirst into the world of essential oils and found these completely natural and toxin-free alternatives, it was then that I vowed never to go back. I even use them during my monthly women’s circles to clear the space of negative energy and I also pass around some frankincense before we start a meditation, as it soothes negative emotions and overwhelming thoughts.

Of course, smell is a very personal thing and what I like you may not. You may be triggered in different ways to certain aromas, due to environmental factors or individual experiences. I believe the essential oils I list below are a great starting point though, you can always switch blends up and experiment yourself to see what gets those olfactory nerves tingling.

How can you use essential oils in your home?

I’ve written a full ‘How to use essential oils’ guide, so if you’re looking for an in-depth description of all the different ways you can use essential oils I’d have a read of that first.

So you’ve figured out all of those words you can’t pronounce on the label of your 99p candle are basically not good. You’re at the point where you think “Get these toxic chemical cleaning products off my skin, out of my house and life!” The new you has officially arrived, you buy organic washing powder, free from all the nasty stuff multi-purpose cleaner, the lot, you’ve gone in hard! But you can’t seem to get that fresh and clean scent you used to with your old chemical products. Well, I’m about to sort that little conundrum out for you.

Invest in a diffuser

I’d say this is the best route to go down to fill your room with a powerful aroma kick. They are safe and easy to use, most come with a timer so they will switch off automatically and you don’t have to think too much about it. They are also great if you have large spaces, or want to add aromas to your space quickly and efficiently.

I use a Vitruvi Diffuser and absolutely love it, it works like a charm and is beautifully designed. Although I don’t use their essential oils as I can’t find much info on their sourcing and sustainable practices.

Try an oil burner

I know it’s not always possible to have open flames around the house, maybe you have little ones running around on a sugar high or puppies having a mad half-hour. If you are able though I think this is a wonderful way to create ambiance in a room, there’s something about lighting a candle and just sitting back.

Sometimes I’ll just sit and stare at the flame, getting lost in the flickers and unintentionally reaching a meditative state. It is an actual form of meditation, here’s a little step-by-step guide if you fancy having a go.

Depending on the size of your container you have to place between 5-10 drops and then place the candle underneath for the aromas to begin filling your space.

Take a look at this really cool Ply & Copper Abel Burner! I haven’t actually tried it so can’t give it a review on how potent it is yet, but I’m sure we can all appreciate the beauty of it!

Make your own room spray

Need a quick burst of fragrance? A room spray has got you covered. I’ve not limited my room sprays to fragrance, I’ve gone all out and created cleaning products such as a concoction of apple cider vinegar, lavender, and peppermint and I used it as a multipurpose spray cleaner. I’m digressing though, I understand the title of the article isn’t “How to make cleaning products with essential oils” (That’s coming up!) let’s stick to fragrancing our home for now.

I feel like a room spray adds that finishing touch after a busy day of weekend cleaning. I don’t limit it to my home though, I like to keep one in my car as well and have a quick spritz before anyone gets in.

How do you make an essential oil room spray I hear you ask? Don’t worry I’ve got you covered.

How to make a room spray

Step #1

Take a glass spray bottle, I usually go for amber glass as it can protect against light damage, and it can also block UV light. Then fill the bottle ¾ full with distilled water.

Step #2

Fill the rest of the bottle with witch hazel almost to the top. This helps the oil and water combine and will help the scent linger for a longer time.

Step #3

Add 20 to 40 drops of your chosen essential oils.

Step #4

Add your bottle spray top and shake well to mix the ingredients (and remember to give it a shake every time you use it)

Conclusion

As I mentioned before essential oil aromas can be personal to you, but this list is a wonderful start to begin you on using your oils at home. Always remember to use high quality oils so you and your family are safe from any unwanted toxins. I’ve got loads of reviews of essential oil brands i’ve tried and tested, so take a look through those if you want some more information on what brand to choose. Using essential oils in your home is a wonderful journey, you’re about to discover great things!
